Ishiyama-dera Temple

Founded in the Nara period, this temple is said to have originated when Emperor Shomu ordered the enshrinement of Nyoirin Kannon, a personal Buddhist image of Prince Shotoku, at this site. The main hall is built atop a विशाल bedrock of silica limestone, designated as a national natural monument, which is also the origin of the temple’s name. It has appeared in many works of Japanese literature such as "Sarashina Nikki" and "The Pillow Book," and it is said that Murasaki Shikibu, the author of "The Tale of Genji," conceived her story here. Many parts of the temple were constructed through donations from Minamoto no Yoritomo, and the temple complex as seen today is believed to have been completed in the early Kamakura period.

Mii-dera Temple

Commonly known as Mii-dera, its official name is Onjo-ji Temple. It is said to have been founded in 672 to mourn the spirit of Prince Otomo, who was defeated in the Jinshin War over imperial succession. It holds a deep connection to Murasaki Shikibu and is also mentioned in her diary, "The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu." Within the temple grounds, visitors can experience activities such as "Shabutsu" (tracing Buddhist images) and ringing the temple bell at "Mii no Bansho," one of the Eight Views of Omi.
