Stops Along the Route
Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine
Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine is the head shrine of the 3,800 Hiyoshi, Hie, and Sanno shrines. Although its founding is recorded in the "Nihon Shoki" and is very ancient, the shrine was completely burned down during Oda Nobunaga’s attack on Mount Hiei. The buildings you see today were rebuilt after the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Fuyoen Main Building
Located in Sakamoto, a designated important traditional building preservation district at the foot of Mount Hiei, this restaurant offers Hiei yuba, lake fish, and local vegetables. You can also enjoy the seasonal beauty of the pond-style strolling garden.
Trekking
Trek through the beautiful natural surroundings, feeling like a practicing monk on the path leading to Enryaku-ji Temple. You will walk along the “Honzaka Route,” a representative trekking path on Mount Hiei.
Enryaku-ji Temple
The head temple of the Tendai sect, Enryaku-ji encompasses the entire Mount Hiei area. It was founded by the early Heian period monk Saicho. During the Heian period, it gained the respect of the Imperial family and nobility and held significant influence. However, in the Sengoku period, it was burned down by Hosokawa Masamoto, the Kanrei of the Muromachi shogunate, causing the main halls to be destroyed. Although later rebuilt, it was once again set on fire due to opposition against Oda Nobunaga.
